Mobile Phone Thief Stole the Wrong Phone

A would-be mobile phone thief chose the wrong phone to steal when he targeted the managing director of Blue Tree Services Ltd, a leading developer of location tracking devices.

(PRWEB) February 13, 2008 -- Mike Smuts was demonstrating how tracking devices work to the directors of ANT Telecom in Broadwater Park, Denham (near Uxbridge, Middlesex) His company offers a software download for suitable mobile phones, KoolTrax Mobile™, that allows the phone's location to be tracked with 4 metre accuracy.

After leaving the phone on a desk and moving to another room to install and run the tracking software, they could see on screen that their phone had started to move. Using an online map, they tracked it to the end of their road, where it stopped.

Daniel Locke of ANT Telecom ran after it, taking with him a BKoolTrax Ranger™ tracking device and his mobile phone. Speaking with Locke on the phone to provide directions, Smuts could see both the stolen phone, and Locke's location as he gave chase.

Locke couldn't see anyone. Smuts said "it's moving towards you now". "There's no-one here", said Locke. "It's passing you now", said Smuts, looking at his screen. "That", said Locke "is a Courier van".

They called the security gate but the van had already passed through, so both Locke and the security staff gave chase. Smuts could see onscreen when the van stopped, turned, and started to return.

"Have I forgotten a parcel?" asked the driver. "No, you've stolen our mobile phone" said security. "Well .. it was just sitting there", he said as he handed it over.

Notes to Editor:

Blue Tree Services Ltd develops and markets GPS location products. KoolTrax Ranger™ is a device aimed at tracking the location of children and people who wander, for instance people with Alzheimers, saving much police time and family anxiety. KoolTrax Mobile™ is a software download for mobile phones that turns them into a tracking device. The phone must have GPS capability and run Windows Mobile 5 (software for other operating systems is being developed).

The location of both types of tracking device may be viewed on an Internet enabled PC running BlueMap™ software. The combination of products is also popular as a lone worker safety system.
