New book Graduation Secrets said to be "mandatory reading" for 18-24 year olds Dave Lloyd, employment recruiter for companies including Apple, Palm, Handspring, and Hughes Electronics, is also founder of the College Success Institute. He has recently published what others are calling the "definitive resource for today's students" and "the best book on student success I've ever read." It's available exclusively at www.graduationsecrets.com San Jose, CA (PRWEB) June 20, 2003 - A recent survey by graduationsecrets.com and Silicon Valley college recruiter Dave Lloyds recent survey of 147 graduating high school seniors resulted in these top concerns of students: (in order)
1. Not having enough money to support themselves 2. Not being able to pay for college 3. Being unprepared for the future 4. Unfamiliar with what careers would best suit them
The career concerns are valid. In this economy, many openings normally available to teens are being snapped up by college graduates as they are forced out of the labor market by those in their mid to late 20s.
The good news is this - the best places for teens to find work are still in the food industry, retail outlets, and service sector. Last summer 36 percent of employed youth worked in retail trade (including fast food restaurants) and 27 percent worked in services, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Dave Lloyd is author of the new digital book, Graduation Secrets: How to Guarantee Academic, Career, and Relational Success published by College Success Institute [ISBN 0-9743106-0-3. He cautions that students tend to underestimate the effort required to obtain a job and give up too early. Beyond that, they dont really grasp the only three reasons anyone is hired: they save the company money, they make the company money, or they make someones life much easier. Grasping this would give them a tremendous advantage in how to present themselves to potential employers."
Mr. Lloyd, who has been researching employment strategies for the last six years as a recruiting consultant for companies including Apple, Palm, Handspring, and Hughes Electronics, offers these guidelines for young adults looking for work:
· Be clear about your objectives and be sure to let potential employers know what they are.
· Be creative in your job search. Very few openings are advertised, especially now. Talk to friends, read the paper, and join local, online organizations to hear about what opportunities may be available.
· Try your best to focus your efforts on a few locations initially (food and service industries are always popular) and move on once youve spoken directly with hiring managers about job openings.
Whats Mr. Lloyds advice for students who havent found work yet for the summer? No one ever said job search is easy, but it is possible, even in this economy. Be open to volunteering your time for better long-term career growth. Also, consider entrepreneurial ways you could use skills you already have to make money right in your own neighborhood. Network in your community and with friends - share job leads, support others. Ask employers and adults for hlep on your resume, your interview style, and your job search strategy. Above all, persevere and don't quit."
Mr. Lloyds new book Graduation Secrets contains numerous, invaluable ways for high school and college students to find part or full-time work this summer, available exclusively at http://www.graduationsecrets.com
