Your Suit Looks Fine – But Where Did You Get That Resume?

The National Résumé Writers’ Association meets this week in Seattle to discuss one of the toughest job-search markets in recent memory. Close to 100 professional résumé writers are expected to attend. Specific issues to be discussed include marketing, technology and business management as well as enhancing résumé-writing skills.

A job applicant submitting a résumé that has not been prepared – or at least evaluated – by a professional résumé writer is no different than one who shows up for an interview in a rumpled or ill-fitting suit says Linda Matias, the incoming president of the National Résumés Writers’ Association on the eve of her organization’s annual convention in Seattle.

“Even a recent college graduate knows to look his or her best in terms of what he or she wears,” Ms. Matias said recently. “Most people wouldn’t dream of showing up for an important interview in something they sewed together themselves.

Yet way too many applicants – from recent graduates to established professionals – think nothing of putting together their own résumés without soliciting professional feedback. Given what’s at stake – a first job, a better job or an once-in-a-lifetime career advancement opportunity – I find that to be rather short-sighted, especially in the tight job market we find ourselves dealing with these days.”

According to Ms. Matias, it’s not necessarily the applicant’s fault. “One of my goals for the NRWA in the coming year is to raise public awareness and educate job seekers on the value of a professional résumé writer,” said Ms. Matias, a Long Island, N.Y.-based professional résumé writer and the owner of a company called CareerStrides. “NRWA members dedicate their time and energies to keeping up-to-date on hiring trends. As a result, we guide job seekers in not only creating winning resumes, but also in strengthening their interview performances, offer negotiations, and job search campaign.”

The theme of this year’s three-day convention, which starts with a pre-convention workshop on Wednesday at the Washington Athletic Club in Seattle, is “Résumé Writing Success: Locking the Pieces Together.” Specific issues to be discussed include marketing, technology and business management as well as enhancing résumé-writing skills. Close to 100 professional résumé writers are expected to attend.

Founded early in 1997, the National Résumé Writers' Association (NRWA) is a not-for-profit, member-driven organization dedicated to promoting high standards of excellence through mentoring, education, and support services.
