BRILLIANT WRITER PROGRAM ANNOUNCES SCHOLARSHIPS FOR STUDENTS TO IMPROVE WRITING SKILLS

Burlington, MA, July 17, 2003- A recent article by Mr. Anand Vaishnav entitled US Schools address plagiarism claims" (Boston Globe, July 14, 2003, City & Region, page B1) inspired a writing coach to offer scholarships to students who wish to improve their writing skills.

The article asserts that students, teachers and administrators in U.S. schools often use borrowed" phrases in their writings without crediting the original sources. Whether done intentionally or not, this often amounts to plagiarism and violates U.S. copyright laws. According to Darshan Thakkar, creator of the Brilliant Writer Program," the problem is deeper than careless writing; it is rooted in poor writing skills." He adds, U.S. schools barely teach the English language; they ignore teaching detailed rules of grammar and styles of writing in high schools. I created the Brilliant Writer Program to teach students how to master the art of writing."

Darshan Thakkar announced 5 scholarships for his Brilliant Writer Program. Tuition for the Brilliant Writer Program begins at $150 per student per semester. With 5 scholarships, that amounts to at least $750 in the form of tuition-free enrollment.

The Brilliant Writer Program is designed to help students improve their writing skills. It has two categories: (1) Academic Writing Class is designed for high school and college students writing book reports, research papers, dissertations, and other writing projects, and (2) Creative Writing Class is designed for those writing articles, essays, stories, books, and other writing projects. Darshan Thakkar, a writing coach, columnist and a screenwriter, teaches the Brilliant Writer Program.

Darshan Thakkar offers some suggestions for improving your writing skills:

- Economize your words. With a few well-chosen words you will deliver you message more powerfully than with a flowery paragraph.

- Energize your writing. Choose strong verbs to convey action. Action will energize your writing.

- Determine your purpose. Are you trying to inform, persuade, or accomplish some other goal? Writing with a purpose will help you write clearly.

- Support your statements. Give examples, details, and credit sources.

The first 5 students to apply will qualify for the scholarships and be able to enroll in the Brilliant Writer Program without paying any tuition for either the Fall 2003 or Spring 2004 semesters. To apply, write to Darshan Thakkar by mail or email with your name, student status, and contact method.
