The Mimail.A virus was infecting emails undetected for six days.

avecho.com’s London mailCENTER began stopping emails infected with Mimail.A at 1.15pm on July 25th 2003. Subscribers, including press and media representatives currently reviewing avecho.com’s service received system messages notifying them of the viruses removal.

Signature file based anti-virus products did not discover Mimail.A until 1st August 2003. Email users protected by these anti-virus products or services which license these products did not begin to deliver protection until midday on the 1st a full six days after GlassWall neutralised the threat.

Mimail.A is a mass mailing worm with its own SMTP engine that forwards itself to the recipients address book. The virus uses social engineering techniques in that it pretends that it has come from the users account administrator encouraging unsuspecting users to open the attachment.

The Mimail.A attachment was named message.zip, and will infect anyone who is only blocking .exe (and similar) attachments. The zip file consists of an HTML file, which also will not be blocked.
