Federal, local and community officials gathered at the border in Jackman today to break ground for the new Land Port of Entry facility that will serve as the home for the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Customs and Border Protection (CBP) operation.

Lurita Doan, Administrator for the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) shared the stage with distinguished speakers Senator Susan M. Collins; Nancy Gilcoine, Assistant Director for Border Security, Department of Homeland Security, Boston Field Operations; Dennis R. Smith, Regional Administrator for the New England Region of GSA, and Glenn C. Rotondo, Assistant Regional Administrator for Public Buildings, GSA New England Region.

“GSA is committed to safely expanding capacity and relieving congestion at our critical U.S. land ports of entry,” said Administrator Lurita Doan. “The future Jackman land port will achieve that goal by replacing a facility built at a time when capacity was not as great and security challenges not so complex. GSA has ignited a building boom to build new ports, lanes and inspection booths that will allow legitimate trade and travelers to move across our borders quickly and securely. Relief is on the way."

The 62,730 square foot facility, which was designed by Orcutt Associates, Inc. will be constructed by J.C.N. Contractors of Manchester, NH. A construction contract in the amount of $25,878,000 was awarded to J.C.N. on January 15, 2008.

The new Land Port of Entry will provide space for the inspection of commercial and vehicular traffic. Today’s groundbreaking ceremony marks the official start of construction on the project, which is scheduled to be complete in 2010.
