Lexicon Software Provides Multi-Document Navigation and Tools for Defined Terms

Lexicon Tools, LLC announces the general release of Lexicon, a Microsoft® Word add-in that provides multi-document navigation and defined term management features. The software is designed to help attorneys and others draft and review complex documentation. Acid-tested against 1,000 Form 10-Ks, Lexicon checks defined terms (even those defined in external documents) and provides unique tools for navigating large documents and sets of related documents.

Houston, TX (PRWEB) April 4, 2008 -- Lawyers and others who work with large, complex documents will benefit from a new program called Lexicon™. Lexicon manages defined terms (e.g., "Defined Terms"), and gives users an innovative way to navigate large documents--even groups of related documents--within Microsoft® Word for Windows.

Developed by Lexicon Tools, LLC, Lexicon extracts a list of Defined Terms from a set of documents and identifies each place where each term is used. Along with displaying all definitions and their uses, Lexicon highlights possible problems such as inconsistent capitalization, terms that are defined more than once, definitions that are never used, and undefined terms.

Lexicon was designed from the ground up to work on the largest, most complex documents. "We acid-tested Lexicon by running it against one thousand Form 10-Ks downloaded from the SEC's Edgar database," says Steven Gullion, President of Lexicon Tools. "These documents averaged over 90,000 words in length, stretching to over 300 pages. The average number of defined terms per document was 70.8 (with a high of 242), and the average number of uses was over 3,000."

Unlike many Word add-ins, Lexicon does not balk at large files. For the 10-Ks in the test, Lexicon's average time to read and analyze each document was 33 seconds, according to Gullion. Documents of 20 to 30 pages in length are processed in two to three seconds.

"Lexicon's like a grammar checker for defined terms," Gullion said. "But the navigation features might be the best thing about the product. Users can move around within a set of deal documents based on definitions and their terms -- we call it context-based navigation -- without having to endlessly click 'Find Next, Find Next.' It turns out to be a good structure for getting to the important parts of the text."
