Bloomberg L.P. Features Oxford Princeton Programme Faculty Member; Identifies Causes and Takeaways from August Blackout - Lack of Accountability and Questionable Reliability Major Factors Leading to the Blackout

Bloomberg L.P. interviewed The Oxord Princeton Programme's Jane Goddard, faculty member and expert in the United States and Canadian electrical industry, regarding August Blackout. Causes, next steps, and history were discussed.

PRINCETON, NJ (PRWEB) October 7, 2003 -on-

one interview delivered worldwide, featured The Oxford Princeton Programme’s Jane Goddard, faculty member and expert in the United States and Canadian electrical industry, to analyze what caused the August blackout.

With many questions still unanswered, Goddard identified key areas the industry should improve to insure grid reliability including new regulations enforcing the responsibility of power companies. During the past year, blackouts affected more than 50 million people in the U.S., Canada and London.

“The industry needs to turn back the page,” explained Goddard. “As a result of deregulation meant to infuse competition into the marketplace and ultimately lower utility costs for consumers, for-profit utility companies are reluctant to share information because they may lose customers; in turn impacting their bottomline.

“Before for-profit utility companies, energy providers maintained grids more responsibly and shared information voluntarily. When a problem developed, they coordinated with surrounding utility companies cutting off the problem in its early stages. The industry needs clear rules around reliability with fees or sanctions for those not meeting those requirements.”

Goddard’s interview can be seen through Bloomberg’s Professional Service, a financial information network reaching more than 260,000 professionals in more than 100 countries.

Goddard, a 23-year veteran in multiple phases of the electricity industry in Western Canada and the United States, joined The Oxford Princeton Programme in June 2002. She spent 20 years with TransAlta, Canada’s largest power generation and wholesale marketing company, working in such areas as substation design, distribution design and marketing. She later rose to the position of a sales manager at Epcor Energy Services.
