"Transcription has often been considered a secondary service by our clients as their demand for these services has been much lower. We wanted to show the market that we have the resources and commitment to make a difference. We see a growing requirement for transcription services, particularly through video now being added to the internet, and we needed to show that we are here and ready. That's why we opened the Axis Language Solutions department. It specifically deals with projects that are not routine translation assignments" by Axis Translations.

What is Transcription
Translation - This is when a text/document is converted from one language into another. The meaning remains.
Interpreting - This is 'live' conversion of speech into a new language. The first person speaks, while the linguist states what is being said in the new language.
Transcription - Transcription is a process through which verbal communication is converted into written text. The source material often consists of video or audio tape recordings of formal or informal conversations, which need to be turned into written form for further analysis, practical usage or sometimes translation into a different language.

Axis Translations offers all these services. For transcription, often what is required is a joint transcription and translation service. The documenting of what has been stated will be the transcription and the translation will be the conversion of the document produced into the required language. An example project could be: Interviews filmed in Italian - the Italian transcription would then be made, followed by an English translation service.

Transcription Clients
Axis Translations has always maintained a consistently high level of service to our clients and this has resulted in much of its growth being by referral. Transcription clients are as varied as our translation clients. We have assisted companies such as the UK television channel ITV. We assist film-makers and independent productions, much of our work ends up on TV somewhere.

We also assist with transcriptions for evidence. Crime can involve people from all backgrounds and the evidence may sometimes have a number of languages spoken. We need to transcribe and translate what has been stated and also provide notes.

Governmental organisations also use our services. We work confidentially and ensure that the client has the full facts.

How Does Axis Translations Differentiate its Services
Attitude is key, but also our project approach. We look at what the client has and try to get a good understanding of what they need and any restrictions that may exist. This sometimes allows us to offer them both the option of what they have asked for and what they actually need. This can save a client money, time and ensure its right first time. After all, Axis Translations are the expert in the language services field and we may have a better way of serving the client, an option they had not thought of.

Another big area is the languages we offer. We serve over 140 languages and in particular can assist with many of the languages other agencies cannot offer. "Many translation agencies actually call us for the difficult languages". A recent example was Hassaniya, where we had to give instructions to the linguist so as to train them to be able to complete transcription assignments. The client had apparently made many calls to other companies before they tried us. We were the only one who said 'yes'.

Transcription Requirements for the Internet
The internet touches all subject matters and a variety of situations. With the internet crossing borders and language barriers, transcription is often required.

There is also growing requirement for 'test transcriptions' where a client may have some foreign language speech and they wish to check what has been stated. It can be different to what they expected.

Situations for Transcription
The following are examples of circumstances in which a transcription may be needed:
-court hearings (a witness' statement or a formal legal proceeding)
-prison (when a prisoner is interviewed under caution)
-data gathering (from interviews subsequently used for statistics, reports, documentaries, research or medical purposes etc.)
-journalistic purposes (interviews relevant to a specific topic which will be subsequently reported and expanded on in a newspaper, magazine, journal etc.)
-business purposes (recordings of conferences, round table or board meetings)
-academic environment (recordings of lectures)
