Search Announced for Legendary 'A 1' Private Number Plates UK number plates experts announce a campaign to clarify the current status of the legendary 'A 1' car registration, probably the most famous number plate in British motoring history. (PRWEB) April 11, 2008 -- Regtransfers.co.uk, the UK's largest independent supplier of private number plates (http://www.regtransfers.co.uk), has announced an appeal for information regarding the whereabouts of A 1, the most famous car number in British motoring history.
The history of this number is subject to controversy, and conflicting accounts of its history may be found in various publications and on the internet. It is commonly believed that A 1 was the first registration issued in the UK, but it seems likely that it was one of the first rather than the very first as although A 1 was issued by the London local authority in 1903, London was not the first local authority to issue car registrations.
Later reports claim that A 1 was sold as recently as 2005 to a member of a foreign royal family. This claim is widely quoted, as is the detail that the number was assigned to a Bentley vehicle. Current data, however, seems to indicate that A 1 is now assigned to a Black Mini Cooper S Automatic.
Regtransfers.co.uk would like to contact the current owner of the mark with a view to bringing the history of A 1 up to date. A spokesman said, "We get so many enquiries from the public and from the media asking us about A 1 that it is clear to us that the number really is an almost legendary piece of motoring history. It would be great if we could compile an accurate history of the number. There are so many different stories on the internet that journalists never know what to believe."
Regtransfers, publisher of the popular industry magazine 'Regtransfers: The World of Personal Number Plates', is offering a cash bounty to anyone who provides information leading to successful, confirmed contact with the current owner. The current owner's privacy will, of course, be respected.
Anyone with information is invited to contact Regtransfers.co.uk by email or to call 01582 470089.
