American University of Antigua Signs Affiliation Agreement with Lehman College and Launches New School Of Nursing

The American University of Antigua College of Medicine has opened a new school, a school of nursing. We did this, to help alleviate and address the shortage of nurses worldwide and especially in the US….It is not that we have too few people who want to be nurses, there are too few schools that have room for qualified applicants.

New York, NY (PRWEB) April 11, 2008 -- Joined by national and international dignitaries who have been leaders in the Healthcare Industry, American University of Antigua (AUA) College of Medicine and City University of New York (CUNY), Lehman College sign an Articulation Agreement for their Schools of Nursing in a ceremonial event held at AUA's Administrative Offices located at Two Wall Street.

According to U.S. government statistics there will be a shortfall of over 1 million nurses in the U.S. alone, and amplified worldwide.

"The nation and the world face a nursing shortage. We want to ensure that qualified individuals who are looking to become caring practitioners in this field are afforded the educational opportunity to do so," said Neal Simon, Esq., President, American University of Antigua, "we believe that our affiliation will help to alleviate the nursing shortage."

The program is designed for students who are interested in earning an Associate of Science in Nursing Degree from AUA. Graduates will be eligible to sit for the National Council Licensure Examination, (NCLEX®) and upon passing, will have an option to continue at Lehman College for an additional year and graduate with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing.

AUA is thankful to the nation of Antigua and Barbuda, chiefly; Hon. Winston Baldwin Spencer, Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda; Hon. John Maginley, Minister of Health; Hon. Dr. Errol Cort, Minister of Finance and Hon. Bertrand Joseph, Minister of Education.

"We are excited about this project, after ten years of wrestling with this shortage," proclaimed Dean Michael Paull, Ph.D., Dean of Individualized and Continuing Education, Lehman College, "we will enlarge this workforce, and we have perfected the model."

Representing Antigua and Barbuda was Consulate General of Antigua and Barbuda, Hon. McChesney G. Emanuel endorsing the new affiliation, "I commend AUA for demonstrating their confidence in the government and the people of Antigua. This speaks volumes of their commitment to the nation of Antigua and Barbuda."

AUA is young and bursting forth with the assistance of Dr. Lorna Scott McBarnette, Ph.D., Vice President for Institutional Development and Vice Provost for Health Professions. She affirmed, "We are not just focused on medicine or nursing, we are going to go a long way."
