Newts Playing Cards Will Not Sell Ghettopoly Newt's believes that a game should be fun for the whole family and enjoyable for all. As a company Newt's has decided to not carry the Ghettopoly because it is not family oriented. CANAL WINCHESTER, OH, October 24, 2003 -- Newt's Playing Cards, as a supplier of primarily playing cards, also supplies their customers with a wide variety of "opoly" games. For the past week they have received hundreds of request asking if they stocked or sold the game Ghettopoly, which has become very popular, primarily due to the games graphic nature.
"David Chang, the game's creator, said his market research included watching MTV and studying the lyrics of rap and hip-hop music." According to his Web site, "video games provided him insight into the culture of the ghetto." writes Mary Mitchell of the Chicago Sun Times. Mr. Chang has created something from which he has watched, not experienced, like most all game creators. The sad part is, he has glorified the problems instead of trying to educate.
"As a store we do not sell pornographic playing cards because we feel they have a negative effect on society and families as a whole," said Bill Dollison, store manager and COO. "At Newt's we try to encourage the family, Ghettopoly is yet another attempt to glorify the ills of our society which ultimately are destroying our families."
Various "Opoly" games have been created over the past few years. They add a fun twist to the game world but do not need to glorify the negatives. Newt's Cards offers positive alternatives like Motownopoly which includes a CD with music to listen to while you play. They also offer Dogopoly, Catopoly, NACAR Monopoly, NFL Monopoly, Simpson Monopoly and many more.
"Due to the graphic and offensive nature of Ghettopoly we will NOT be selling this game at Newt's Playing Cards!" says owner, James Esteph. "It is a game that not only does not fit into our website theme (www.newtscards.com) or store, but does not align morally with our personal beliefs."
Newt's believes that a game should be fun for the whole family and enjoyable for all. As a company Newt's has decided to not carry the game because it is not family oriented. We feel the best way to eliminate this or any offensive product, is to not buy it.
