David is a native of North Carolina. He graduated summa cum laude from Lenoir-Rhyne College (a college founded by his great, great, great uncle) with a B.A. in Economics and Philosophy. While at Lenoir-Rhyne, David was selected as a North Carolina state finalist for the Rhodes Scholarship and served as president of the Student Government Association. After graduation, he earned a Masters degree in Economics from North Carolina State University before pursuing his career in the financial services industry.

A resident of Pinehurst, NC, he began his association with the Diefendorf family as the lead voice in the barbershop quartet, The Sandbaggers, where Monroe "Dief" Diefendorf, Sr. sings bass. "David is the brightest young professional that I have seen in my 60 years in the business," says Dief.
