Eden Springs, Europe’s leading provider of office water coolers and workplace drinking solutions, has announced a charity partnership with the not-for-profit organisation People Help People – One World. The agreement - which spans an initial three year period - will provide support for three drinking water projects in Tanzania, Africa.

Funding from Eden Springs will secure the provision of drinking water supply systems in three secondary schools in the Uru district of Kilimanjaro, Tanzania. As a result, approximately 1,000 school children and a further 7,500 residents in the surrounding communities will have access to a clean drinking water supply.

Headquartered in Switzerland, Eden Springs serves 15 European countries with water coolers and other drinking solutions. The company has chosen to partner with People help People - One World because of the organisation’s strong track record in delivering tangible projects and its structure, which sees up to 95 per cent of donations going directly to communities.

Chief executive officer of Eden Springs, Raanan Zilberman, comments: “We spent a lot of time looking for the right partner and it was important that they shared our values and ‘can do’ attitude. Obviously, selecting a charity that was involved in water projects was a prime attraction for us, but we also wanted to ensure our chosen partner would work efficiently and make a big difference to people’s lives through our support. People help People - One World has been established in Tanzania since 1985 and has helped to transform living conditions for hundreds of thousands of people across the country.”

While Eden Springs has pledged to donate at least €30,000 each year in support of the three projects, the water cooler company is also engaging with its employees in 15 European businesses to ensure that further funds are raised for the charity at a local level. In the longer term, Eden Springs and People help People hope to extend the project by providing clean drinking water supplies to four further schools in the Uru district.

Zilberman adds: “Our experience as shown that while charity donations are a nice gesture, many companies forget to assess the effectiveness of their giving. We’re very excited about this partnership and the impact it will have at a local level in Tanzania. Through regular updates from People help People we will be able to see how our support is making a real difference to people’s lives.”

An estimated 1.2 billion people in 60 countries worldwide have insufficient access to clean drinking water. The consequences for children are catastrophic: diarrhoea, unhealthy nutrition, insufficient body growth, and death. Every year, 1.5 million children die of diarrhoea before they turn five because of a lack of drinking water, unsuitable sanitary facilities and poor hygiene.

In Tanzania today only 55 per cent of people have access to clean drinking water and only 7 per cent of all children have access to secondary education*. In the Uru district, children and residents of the nearby villages currently have to resort to drinking dirty surface water or walking up to 10km (6 miles) in order to access clean drinking water. The partnership between Eden Springs and People help People will not only benefit the schoolchildren but also all of the communities around the schools who will have access to the water for both drinking and farming.
