Volume Transportation Offers Shippers Carbon Neutral Shipping

Volume Transportation announced today that it has become a GreenWay Miles Certified Carrier in order to offer their customers the ability to ship product on a carbon neutral basis.

Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) August 09, 2011

“We’re very excited about our ability to offer carbon neutral shipping solutions,” said Joe Coleman, CEO of Volume Transportation. “Our customers are becoming increasingly knowledgeable and concerned about carbon emissions in their supply chain. Volume Transportation becoming a GreenWay Miles Certified Carrier provides them the sustainability choices they are looking for.”

“GreenWay Miles provides companies in the logistics industry two major services,” explains Joe White, CEO of GreenWay Miles. “First we conduct comprehensive carbon fleet and carbon facility audits that, when combined, define an individual carrier’s carbon footprint. Then, using audit results, total miles run per year and current carbon offset pricing, we calculate and certify each carrier’s ‘GreenWay Miles Rate Premium’; the per mile rate a shipper could pay to offset their carbon emissions with that carrier.”

Carbon Offsets are investments in projects that reduce carbon emissions into the atmosphere such as reforestation projects or a landfill gas-to-energy project. “GreenWay Miles provides access to top quality offset projects at reasonable costs,” explains Joe White. “Based on current market pricing, most of our carriers offer a GreenWay Miles Rate Premium of less than a penny per mile.”

Providing shippers precise carbon footprint information and carbon neutral shipping options are not the only benefits of becoming a GreenWay Miles Certified Carrier. “The comprehensive audits provided by GreenWay Miles provides Volume Transportation a carbon footprint baseline we can use to measure annual improvements in reducing carbon emissions,” explains Joe Coleman.

GreenWay Miles membership is open to all logistics industry companies including motor carriers, railroads, logistics companies, warehouses, distribution centers, 3PLs and truck stops. Participating non-transport logistics companies have the ability to offset their facility carbon emissions through a similar audit process.

According to Joe White, “GreenWay Miles builds on the accomplishments of EPA’s SmartWay Program that focuses on fleet emissions by adding in the carbon impact of terminal, office and warehouse operations to provide not only a complete measure of carbon output but the option to offset that carbon. Additionally, GreenWay Miles Certified Carriers have a significant competitive advantage in that they can now bid new traffic on a carbon neutral basis.”
