MODEL’S WORKBOOK GIVES THE REAL DEAL ON MODELING

Experienced models (one of whom is now also a Hollywood agent) wrote a book on how to get started and have a successful career as a model. The workbook provides a step-by-step guide on how to find a photographer, agent and ongoing work and provides tips on how to avoid scams.

So, you want to be a model, but you’ve got a few questions. Do I have to be tall? Do I have to be thin? Do I have to be glamorous? “No, no and no,” respond co-authors Laura Boulay and William Squire, in their just released book, The Model’s Workbook, A Hollywood Agent’s Twenty-Step Guide To Launching Your Modeling Career. “Anyone can model,” the authors assert. “That doesn’t mean it’s easy, but anyone with discipline, talent, drive and correct information can create a successful modeling career.” The key is to know what type of modeling you are appropriate for, whether it’s real people modeling, runway or high fashion print.

In The Model’s Workbook, Boulay and Squire share the knowledge they gained from years of modeling and acting to create a step-by-step how-to guide with “Work Pages” people can use every step of the way, with advice and checklists for each section, from finding a photographer to booking your first job and managing your career. They cover topics such as, what to say to agents and photographers, how to get great photos, managing your agency relationship and what to keep in your bag when you go on shoots. The book also contains a question and answer section, in which the authors address some of the most common questions and a glossary of modeling industry lingo.

Boulay and Squire emphasize that it takes persistence, organization and hard work to become a model and very few people are “discovered” walking down the street. “Models are made, not discovered,” advises Squire, who has been a model and modeling coach and agent in Hollywood for years. “People in the industry look for models who are dependable, with a strong work ethic and good people skills.”

Â“It’s not ‘been there, done that’ for us. We’re still here and we’re still doing it and having a blast,” said Boulay, who has been modeling, acting and dancing since she was a child. “Over the years, countless people have asked us, ‘How do I get into modeling?’ We saw a real need to give people concise, accurate information based on what we’ve learned in our careers, so we wrote the book. We want people to take responsibility for their dreams and to be accountable for them. The workbook concept is a way for people to learn and do at the same time. We want to help people achieve their goals.”

William Squire will be signing books at Barnes and Noble at the Kahala Mall in Honolulu, Hawaii on November 15, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.
