Nine Year Old Coppell Cub Scout Tops $5,000 in Door-to-Door Popcorn Sales
Kyler Henderson was on a mission to become the Top Popcorn Salesman for his Cub Scout Pack fundraiser . He spent nearly 6 weeks knocking on over 1,000 doors to meet his goal.
Coppell, Texas (PRWEB) November 30, 2011
In his fourth year as a Cub Scout in Pack 841 of Austin Elementary in Coppell, Texas, Kyler Henderson was on a mission! He set out to be the top popcorn salesman in his local Pack, with the potential to win a Cowboy’s football or Dallas Maverick party for his friends – a prize gifted for top sales within the entire Circle Ten Council. In order to earn one of the top prizes, Kyler needed to set his sales goal at $5,000.For safety concerns, Cub Scouts are required to be accompanied by a parent. So, with the support of his father Brad, Kyler walked door-to-door throughout several neighborhoods in Coppell for many nights and weekends during the traditional Boy Scouts of America Popcorn sale through September and October. As with many ten year olds, Kyler’s Saturdays began with a soccer game. But instead of spending the afternoons with friends, his days were followed by knocking on doors in order to achieve a weekly goal.In order to maintain daily and weekly sales goals, Kyler continued to sell on week days as potential customers were returning home from work or cooking dinner.
“We had to get Kyler a door-knocker early on in the sales season,” his father said. “He carried a highlighter pen to knock on doors because his knuckles were getting sore.” Brad joked from time to time with Kyler’s customers that his son was getting the school of hard knocks. “We estimated Kyler knocked on more than 1,000 doors when it was said and done.”
Nearing the end of the Scout selling season, he had filled up nearly nine pages of sales sheets and though tired, Kyler said to his parents, “Why don’t we just finish filling out this page too.” And with that, Kyler surpassed his goal the night just before his final tally was due to be turned in.
“Even though our Pack’s overall popcorn sales goal was increased this year to meet the raising cost of Scouting, the Pack still came up a little short.” Kyler’s father said. “Profits from the popcorn fundraiser help support the Pack’s Scouting activities throughout the year. I am very proud that Kyler did nearly a third of the entire Pack’s sales.” With such a large number of deliveries to complete, Kyler was unable to attend a Webeloree Campout held in November.
At the time of this press release, it wasn't known if he won a party. Anyone still wishing to buy Boy Scout popcorn, or those who’d like to make a donation to Pack 841 on Kyler’s behalf, may call Brad Henderson at 972-471-0317.
Note: Below is text from a congratulatory note Kyler received from the Pack 841 Committee Chair.
Dear Kyler,
Please accept my personal congratulations and thanks for setting along with achieving your sales goals. They are truly deserved for the excellence displayed in "Selling (over) $5,000 worth of Popcorn" this year. I applaud your perseverance and dedication to your sales.
Many Scouts are excited and enthusiastic the night of the launch of the Popcorn Sales. They envision themselves earning the grand prizes that Trail's End offers. However, it's not every day that you hear of a Scout that is willing to set such a high goal, followed then by developing a strategy as well as executing a plan in order to meet and then exceed that goal!
I look forward to watching you continue to grow within Cub Scouting and then crossing over to Boy Scouting. I believe you have a very bright future ahead of you. Continue to set and live high goals for the rest of your life!
Yours in Scouting,
Larry Hediger
