Santa Monica Indian Art Show

Jan.10 (11-6) -- Jan. 11 (11-5)

2004

Santa Monica Civic Auditorium (Pico/Main)

$7 adults, under 17 free

The upcoming Santa Monica Indian Art Show features a wide range of collectible contemporary and antique Native American art Jan. 10 and 11 at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium (Pico/Main), Santa Monica.

Considered to be a cultural arts classroom, this two-day event is sponsored by KR Martindale Show Management and will feature one-of-a -kind historic and present day objects of art, including Guatemalan masks, Southwestern kachinas, Plains Indian beadwork, Pacific Northwest carvings, Spanish Colonial and Pre-Columbian art.

The show also highlights some of today's most exciting award winning artists, sculptors, and jewelers, including Andrew Redhorse Alvarez, Cliff Fragua, Ronald Chee, and Baje Whitethorne.

Special performances include the Emmy award winning music of Xavier Quijas Xyaotl, and a Storytelling Festival both days with native Southern California Indian storytellers Ernest Siva and Ted and Dennis Garcia.

In a modern day gallery setting, more than 85 knowledgeable antique dealers and contemporary Native American artists will be on hand to talk about the items they bring to the show. In some cases, the items may be the only remaining art materials of an indigenous society. Contemporary artists will also be available to discuss their rich artistic traditions. No sacred items will be displayed or sold.

Martindale, sponsor of the countrys largest Indian Art shows, has a passion for the Santa Monica Indian Art Show. It was the very first show he attended as a young Santa Monica boy. There he began his collection of arrowheads and moccasins. A member of the Antique Tribal Art Dealers Association, he is dedicated to preserving native art through cultural shows such as this one.

Tickets are $7 for adults, and free for children 17 and under. A donation is suggested for the Storytelling Festival. For information: KR Martindale Show Management at 818-905-9299 or 800-656-9278. Visit www.americanindianartshow.com or ticketweb.com (866-468-3398).
