HINDU SWAYAMSEVAK SANGH (HSS) OF MASSACHUSETTS WILL HOST 2ND ANNUAL CHILDREN’S FESTIVAL, A FREE EVENT, ON JANUARY 10, 2004.

Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (HSS), a non-profit cultural organization, focused on Hindu community in the USA, will host its 2nd annual ‘Bala Mela’ (children’s festival) on January 10, 2004 in Framingham, MA. This event is expected to draw more than 500 people and will feature children's musical performances, arts & crafts, henna designs, information on alternatives to TV, and Indian snacks and desserts, among more than 15 stalls.

Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (HSS), a non-profit cultural organization, focused on Hindu community in the USA, will host its 2nd annual ‘Bala Mela’ (children’s festival) on Saturday, January 10, 2004 (Snow Date: January 17, 2004). This free event is expected to draw more than 500 people.

The inaugural Bala Mela (January 2003) drew more than 425 attendees of all ages. Children presented cultural musical performances including songs, dances, and skits. Children and adults participated in games such as archery, art such as making greeting cards, and activities such as drawing, face painting, and henna designs. Due to popular demand, this year’s program will also feature musical performances, henna design, face painting, and arts & crafts such as decorating clay lamps and ‘rangoli’ designs. One of the more than 15 booths will also feature alternatives to television. Stalls with Indian snacks and desserts will also be open throughout most of the program. This year more than 500 people are expected to attend the cost-free Bala Mela at Keefe Technical School in Framingham, MA, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

HSS organizes this free event during the Hindu Makar Sankranti Festival. The time when the Sun changes direction from one constellation of the Zodiac to another is known as Sankranti. Transition of the Sun from Sagittarius to Capricorn during the winter solstice (that is when the sun is over the tropic of Capricorn) in the northern hemisphere (Uttarayana) is known as Makar Sankranti. According to the solar calendar, on this day, the day and night are of exact number of hours. Hindus all over the world celebrate this day of Sun’s northward journey as an auspicious day to mark the continued forward movement of human kind.
