SPIN ON WALL STREET! The dot-com bust tanked many Bay Area investors--including one couple who put their own spin on it (PRWEB) December 17, 2003 -- S.F. Chronicle 12/9 feature story by Peter Hartlaub writes, "Donald and Betty Deitch lived a nightmare shared by hundreds of other Bay Area residents. They invested heavily during the tech boom, got caught in the middle of a plummeting market, and lost most of their savings. But the Deitches' method of therapy was unique...they invented a board game, Wall Street Spin."
"Many people like ourselves were hurt in the market. We wanted a game that would be fun and help lift people's spirits," said Donald, a former mortgage banking executive.
In the tongue-in-cheek game, players buy and sell properties with names such as "UWait Freight Transportation" and "Side FX Pharmaceuticals." The object is to acquire wealth, although there's an unpredictable spinner that gives the market the same randomness that it possesses in real life.
The entrepreneurs got help figuring out the funny names from Donald's brother, Oscar-winning animation director Gene Deitch.
Added Betty: "We realized that when the chips are down, you want to have fun with your family and friends."
"I think a function of our game is pubic service," Betty Deitch said. "It's therapy."
