1)    Always have plenty of cool fresh water available inside and out. Use ice-cubes to keep it refreshed.

2)    Keep your pets indoors as much as possible where it's air-conditioned and comfortable. This is critical when temperatures exceed 90 degrees.

3)    If pets are outside during the day, make sure there is plenty of shade for them.

4)    Try to walk your dog early in the morning and in the evening hours to protect their pads from contact burns. Pad burns can be very painful for dogs and difficult to treat.

5)    Consider shaving your pets to keep them cooler. Did you know your pet's average body temperature is between 100 and 102.5 degrees normally?

6)    Just like humans, light or fair-skinned animals can burn in the sunlight. Ask your veterinarian for a sun-block recommendation that's right for your pet.

7)    Check your pet's eyelids and ears daily for sunburns and blisters.

8)    Brush your pets frequently allowing more airflow to their body and skin. Just imagine if you had all that fur and hair in 90-degree weather.

9)    If you notice your pet's behavior is abnormal like pacing, panting, disorientation, listlessness, see your veterinarian immediately. Your pet may be experiencing heat stress or heatstroke.

10)    Consider feeding your cat wet food as this will ensure adequate water intake.
