Two El Cajon, CA High School Seniors Raise $700.00 for the Purchase of Kinder Cans for San Diego Children's Hospital

Two High School Seniors raised enough funds to purchase 10 Kinder Cans for hospitalized children. The teens hoped to put smiles on the faces of children who are enduring medical treatments most people dont read about, let alone live through. On January 5, 2004, Valhalla High School students Lacy Garcia, age 17, and Scott Hollister, age 17 delivered KinderCans to San Diego Childrens Hospital.

(PRWEB) January 16 2004--Lacy Garcia and Scott Hollister, Valhalla high school seniors and classmates in a government class, were given a class assignment to create and implement a community service project. The two chose hospitalized children as the focus of the project and picked San Diego Children's Hospital for their donation of Kinder Cans. The high school seniors wanted to deliver fun, happiness and smiles to the kids that were undergoing medical procedures due to trauma, abuse or health issues. Lacy asked her sister, Gloria Bautista, owner of GGs Yogurt in El Cajon, if she would help organize a fundraiser at her store. With her experience as a coordinator for Valhallas color guard corps and band fundraisers, Lacy knew she would be coached well by her sister.

With Glorias assistance, Lacy contacted Kinder Cans owner Kelly Hartmann and offered to purchase Kinder Cans with money they would raise. The seniors chose Kinder Cans as their choice for gifts because of their company mission, unique packaging, and excellent choice of products, which include educational and creative toys and games. Kelly agreed to help oversee their project and go with the teens to deliver the gifts. When she asked the two seniors why they chose to focus on children for their community service project, Lacy said, Because as seniors in high school, were able to face our future and decide what careers we want. However, children who are ill may not get the same chance, so we wanted to give kids an opportunity to hope, gain confidence, and most importantly, have fun. After all, Lacy said, isnt that what being a child is all about?"

Having decided what they would do, 'Project Making Children Smile sprang into action. Armed with flyers and stories of children they found on KinderCans.com web site, they began canvassing their neighborhoods, stores and area businesses asking for monetary gifts to help them purchase KinderCans. They even called their family and friends to help out. One friend, Danielle Fitzpatrick asked if she could help and Lacy and Scott took her up on her offer. The two seniors managed to raise more than $700.00, enough to help 10 children. Even though the school project is complete, Lacy wishes to continue raising funds on her own throughout the year to send KinderCans to as many children as possible.

Not only did Lacy and Scott raise funds, they also logged more than 44 hours of community service while Danielle contributed about 10 hours. We are proud of Lacy, Scott and Danielle, Gloria said. These students accomplished their goals and learned the importance of giving to and serving their community. They brought fun, smiles and hope to these children." Kelly agreed with Gloria and added by saying It is also important for parents of ill children to know there are people out there who are rooting for the recovery of their children. I believe that Americas children are the responsibility of our entire nation, and should be empowered to believe in themselves, their strengths, and their abilities to achieve, overcome, and succeed."
