OPEN LETTER TO ALL COMEDIANS FROM FAMILY DIGEST MAGAZINE

Do you think you’re the best at PLAYING THE DOZENS?

Can you talk about someone’s mother without shame or pity?

If you answered “yes” to the two questions above, then we dare you to compete in Family Digest Magazine’s 2004 PLAYING THE DOZENS National Championship.

If you don’t know what PLAYING THE DOZENS is, then you need to step off!

We invite the following comedic legends and any other professionals or amateurs who think they’re up to the challenge to step to the microphone at the PLAYING THE DOZENS National Championship in Las Vegas, Nevada (July 2 and 3, 2004).

If you know any of the folks on the list above, or any other rising talents, big mouths or barber shop wise guys, amateurs or professionals, let them know that this is their chance to be known as the PLAYING THE DOZENS Champion and celebrated nationwide. Talk may be cheap. But it can also make you famous.

Round by round judging will be by audience vote and a specially selected panel. You could be crowned the PLAYING THE DOZENS National Champion and win a trophy and some money. More important, you will have bragging rights. We will crown a champion and 3 runners-up at the end of the PLAYING THE DOZENS National Championship. More important, perhaps, is that the top finishers will be heralded in Family Digest Magazine and in press releases reaching more than 600 Newspapers, magazines, radio stations and websites, as well as cable outlets and TV networks. Millions will salute 2004’s ultimate PLAYING THE DOZENS maestro.

The PLAYING THE DOZENS National Championship will be hosted in Las Vegas in conjunction with Family Digest’s 2004 Bid Whist World Championship & Family Fun Weekend. Bid Whist is the Black community’s most popular card game and a fixture at family reunions and other gatherings. Our Bid Whist tournament features teams of 2 in Celebrity, College student and Open Divisions. A winning team will be declared in each division, along with a cash prize. There are no professionals—just regular folks who want to come together around a game that is synonymous with Black culture. Fun events are being held during the weekend for contestants, their family, friends, and spectators. There’ll be parties, a Comedy Showcase, musical entertainment, the Family Digest Fun-Zone with age appropriate children’s entertainment, an Exhibit Hall, a Town Hall meeting to discuss issues that face African Americans, and seminars hosted by experts in relationships, personal & family development and health. We’re also holding Family Digest’s Desert Heat Classic Golf Tournament for all golfers.

During the July 1-4, 2004 weekend, we’ll also give recognition to the 25 Best “Black College” Athletes of All Time. These great athletes & coaches – many of whom have been slighted by history’s view – have set the standard in track & field, football, baseball, basketball, and a host of other sports, at the collegiate, Olympic and pro level.

Finally, we’ll present the Family Digest Awards. These awards recognize celebrities, grassroots

folks, activists, TV shows, literature and organizations whose actions empower the Black family.
