Many of the buyers IDC works with are embracing this new technology. Since we started sending digital booklets, we’ve started to get orders from buyers who have never ordered from IDC before.

Nearly half of US music sales are still on CD, but the distribution cost to get music to buyers has kept physical distribution out of the reach of many aspiring musical acts. Independent Distribution Collective (IDC) in San Francisco is changing the music distribution landscape with the launch of their customizable, web-based digital booklets, which deliver everything buyers need to their inbox.
Instead of mailing a package of physical CDs to music buyers, IDC creates and electronically distributes a smart and elegant electronic package. That package contains everything from cover images and audio samples hosted by Soundcloud (another IDC partner) to downloadable one-sheets and quick order forms that allow the buyer to place orders by email.
“To compete in an increasingly digital business atmosphere, you need to make a great digital impression,” said IDC founder and President Steffen Franz. “So while many distributors continue to solicit with spreadsheets or pricy physical CDs—which is a strain on the environment and a buyer’s desk space—IDC has moved to digital booklets, which allow us to deliver a high-quality package to music buyers by email for immediate review and consideration.”
This is the first application of Simplebooklet.com within the music industry to market and promote to retailers, and Franz believes it is only the tip of the iceberg for its potential uses. IDC has already implemented the technique as a marketing tool for some of the artists and labels the company represents.
“Many of the buyers IDC works with are embracing this new technology. Since we started sending digital booklets, we’ve started to get orders from buyers who have never ordered from IDC before,” said Franz. “This tool really steps up public relations, radio promotion, and other IDC marketing efforts.”
IDC’s Operations Manager Ben Lang initially visualized the impact Simplebooklet.com could have on the music industry. Working closely with Simplebooklet.com founder Scott Brownlee, a customizable digital booklet was created that delivers all the necessary information a buyer needs. IDC then distributes the booklet by email, enabling an instantaneous and environmentally-friendly marketing interaction.
