FORT COLLINS, CO - October 1999 - In a 1917 survey conducted with 82 US publishing firms, statistics reported that 1,406 women were employed in the publishing industry. Of these 1,406 women, 259 were in editorial positions, 321 were involved in promotional activities, and 826 were in administrative and stenographic positions. More than seventy years later women are still predominantly employed in the same, background positions of yester year.

However, thanks to best-selling, authors such as Vicki Lansky, Louise Hay, Marlo Morgan, Irma Rombauer, and most recently, MJ Rose, women can now pursue, with confidence, their goals as self-published authors, independent publishers, and CEOs and presidents of small presses.

Self-publishing is making a strong resurrection, and women will be major, front-line participants this time around. One way for them to get started is with "The Woman's Guide to Self-Publishing: A Comprehensive Guide for Helping Women Pursue and Understand Self-Publishing" (ISBN 0-9664848-9-4, Trade paperback, 236 pp., 8x10, $17.95). It is an invaluable resource for women around the world.

What makes this book different from the others is the approach taken - from a woman's point of view. Self-publishing is not gender specific, but there is a lost audience of women writers looking for a resources that talks directly to them. Veteran self-published author, Donna M. Murphy shares her research and experiences with topics such as:
(more over)

·Why women should consider self-publishing,
·A historical perspective of women in publishing,
·First-hand experiences from successfully self-published authors,
·The author's personal experience with self-publishing,
·The business of self-publishing, and
·The national and global impact of women in business.

"The Woman's Guide to Self-Publishing" is a practical, hands-on guide that offers a strategic plan on how to go from research to a finished book. Loaded with helpful hints, sample forms, checklists, and valuable resources, this comprehensive guide saves the reader time and money.

This increasingly popular subject has sparked a companion electronic newsletter; "The Woman's Guide to Self-Publishing Newsletter" that not only has captured the interest of its US audience, but has also incorporated an international subscriber base (including the UK, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, New Zealand, Denmark and Canada).

Mary Embree, Executive Director of the Small Publishers, Authors & Writers Network (SPAWN) says of it, "The Woman's Guide to Self-Publishing will be a great new reference for our members!" Co-author of Jump Start Your Books Sales and The Complete Guide to Self-Publishing, Marilyn Ross expresses that, "if you're a female writer - or a professional or entrepreneur with specialized knowledge to share - you'll find Donna Murphy's book a treasure trove of help. This book is not only informational but inspirational."

"The Woman's Guide to Self-Publishing," published by IRIE Publishing, is distributed to the trade by Baker & Taylor, Quality Books, Inc., Amazon.com, BarnesandNoble.com, and direct from the publisher. It can be purchased in national bookstores or ordered direct from IRIE Publishing by sending $17.95 (plus $3 S/H) to: PO Box 273123, 301 Boardwalk Drive, Fort Collins, CO 80527.
