BRENAU PROFESSOR PUBLISHES BOOK

GAINESVILLE, Ga. - Dr. Catherine Lewis is an assistant professor of English and history at Brenau University and the special projects coordinator at the Atlanta History Center. In her spare time, she ponders the history of golf. Fortunately for Brenau, her musings have taken shape in the past year. In April 1999, the Center opened the permanent exhibit, "Down the Fairway with Bobby Jones," which was curated by Lewis. In March of this year, she published a book with images from a variety of collections titled Considerable Passions: Golf, the Masters, and the Legacy of Bobby Jones. She explains, "This has been an interesting and productive year for golf history-one that reflects the importance of the sport within American culture at large."

Considerable Passions tells the story of the evolution of golf. It is a book about the history of golf since the era of Bobby Jones. The book acts as a companion to the Atlanta History Center's exhibition. It includes pictures of golf artifacts, timelines and photos of famous golfers. It also contains one of the most comprehensive bibliographies on Jones.

Lewis chose to write this book because she believes that Bobby Jones "represents everything that is good and pure in sports." In 1955, the United States Golf Association agreed in giving him the highest sportsmanship award for his attitude toward the game. Famed sportswriter, Grantland Rice said that Jones "has been the ideal sportsman in every contest, always scrupulous in observing not only the letter of the rules but the spirit of the game."

Triumph Books published 20,000 copies of Considerable Passions and will spend the spring and summer marketing the book to scholars, museums and golf enthusiasts. Proceeds from the book will help support the exhibition. In the fall, in time for the seventieth anniversary of the Grand Slam, Brenau will host a lecture and book signing. Copies are currently available at the History Center and will available be at Brenau's campus bookstore on March 31.

Brenau University, founded in 1878 in downtown Gainesville, Ga., is a private comprehensive university that includes the Academy, Women's College and Evening and Weekend College. These three divisions, distinct yet complimentary, offer diverse educational opportunities founded in the liberal arts which lead to intellectual and professional development, foster personal growth, encourage community responsibility and global understanding.
