Muhammad Ali, Dave Thomas Team Up For Midwest Unveiling of Adoption Stamp

Muhammad Ali, Dave Thomas join Illinois Governor George H. Ryan for Midwest Debut of New U.S. Postal Service Adoption Stamp
EVANSTON, IL -- The first U.S. Postal Service stamp recognizing the loving act of adoption will go on sale nationwide on May 11, 2000. To celebrate the release of the new Adoption Stamp, a special unveiling ceremony will be held at 2:30 p.m. on that day at The Cradle Adoption Agency, 2049 Ridge Avenue, Evanston, Illinois.
Among the dignitaries participating in the stamp unveiling will be: three-time world heavyweight boxing champ, and adoptive parent, Muhammad Ali; Dave Thomas, founder of Wendys International Inc., and the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption; Illinois Governor George H. Ryan; and NFL Hall-of-Fame running back, and Cradle adoptive father, Gale Sayers.

Each year more than 100,000 infants and older children are available for adoption in the U.S. With the issuance of the Adoption Stamp, the Postal Service continues its tradition of highlighting important social issues. Greg Berger of Bethesda, Maryland, who was adopted himself, illustrated the new stamp.
"The Cradle is very honored to be part of the unveiling of this beautiful stamp," said Julie Tye, Cradle President. "Awareness of the positive aspects of adoption is critically important for the many children and families who can benefit from it. This stamp -- and the historic event of its unveiling -- will do so much to increase that awareness."
