DIRECTORY ENABLED NETWORKING (DEN) IS KEY TO PROVIDING AGILE, ENTERPRISE-WIDE INFORMATION ACCESS

New ATG Technology Guide: Directory Enabled Networking

To remain competitive in today's emerging global marketplace businesses need fast access to accurate, complex and up-to-date information. But in today's established enterprise, business-critical information may be widely scattered over multiple heterogeneous and often incompatible data base systems. And organizations rely on proprietary infrastructures and/or systems that do not interact well with other systems. Managers cannot easily replace these systems, not only because it is just too costly and complicated to deserve serious consideration, but because the systems often have features, capabilities and dependencies that are really valuable to the organization.

Directory Enabled Networking (DEN) is an emerging standard that holds the keys to resolving these issues. By separating out the logical from the physical attributes of network objects, DEN enables centralized, platform-independent, enterprise-wide information management, while still leveraging the power of existing systems. When used together with a policy server, DEN also enables dynamic resource management and differential QoS across multiple enterprise networks.

According to Jerry Ryan, Editor-in-Chief for techguide.com, "Directories are the basis for intelligent networking. They allow networks to recognize both users and applications on the network. While directories themselves are not new technology, the technology needed to support centralized network management via a unified logical directory has only recently become available. In this type of arrangement, with just one set of identifying features, users and applications can be recognized across a wide variety of platforms."

The many issues and benefits associated with DEN are presented in the latest ATG Technology Guide (white paper) entitled, "Directory Enabled Networking", written and published by ATG's techguide.com service and available free on-line at http://www.techguide.com/news .
This Technology Guide examines the current state of the DEN standard, as well as the technology that is currently available to support it.

techguide.com writes, produces and publishes Technology Guides that discuss the use and implementation of emerging technologies in six primary areas: Communications & Networking, the Internet, Computer Telephony, Data Warehousing, Document Management, and Enterprise Computing. Each Technology Guide in the series provides objective information and practical guidance. Our team of technology editors write each Guide to assist IT and business professionals in making informed decisions about all aspects of technology applications development and strategic deployment.
