"Active Directory Programming" Leads Programmers through Design and Creation of Active Directory-enabled Applications

Sams Publishing launches industrys first title on programming the Active Directory

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana -- May 17, 2000 -- The Active Directory has emerged as the most important feature of Windows 2000. A key component of all Windows 2000 software - PC Magazine calls it a significant part of the Windows 2000 family, (making) management across the platform much more powerful"- knowledge of Microsoft's new directory service is a must for developers. "Active Directory Programming" from Sams Publishing, an imprint of Macmillan USA, is the industrys first book on programming the Active Directory and provides readers with all the information they need to tap into the Active Directory from their own programs.

Written by a developer for developers, the book targets programmers with Win32 and Visual C++ experience who are interested in programming the Active Directory. According to author Gil Kirkpatrick, integrating applications with Active Directory can make them more secure and easier to use, as well as easier to install and manage. Using Active Directory can also make applications easier to write and maintain. In addition, Active Directory compatibility is required for applications to receive Microsofts Certified for Windows 2000 logo.

"Active Directory Programming" provides a real-world solutions-oriented approach to application development. Organized into five sections, the book first lays the groundwork for how the Active Directory works, then teaches readers how to design and create Active Directory-enabled applications.

 Part I: Active Directory Fundamentals" covers the basics of Active Directory, including terminology, the relationship between Active Directory and DNS, the Active Directory security model, and a road map to key information contained in the Active Directory.
 Part II: The Contents of Active Directory" describes the structure and content of Active Directory, listing different kinds of objects that can be found and their attributes.
 Part III: Active Directory Services Interface (ADSI)" serves as a reference section for ADSI, Microsofts preferred method for accessing Active Directory.
 Part IV: Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP)" is a reference section for Microsofts implementation of the LDAP application programming interface.
 Part V includes two appendixes that describe all the ADSI interfaces supported by Active Directory and all the LDAP functions available from the Microsoft LDAP client library.

An accompanying CD-ROM contains all the source code as well as the fully functional sample applications used within the book. Value-added third-party tools and utilities for working the Active Directory are also included.

Kirkpatrick is director of engineering at NetPro. He was recently lead engineer and architect for Directory Analyzer for Active Directory, the first and only monitoring and troubleshooting tool for Active Directory. Kirkpatricks professional software experience dates back to 1976, when he began writing applications and software tools in DataBasic for the Pick operating system. Since then, he has designed and developed many different kinds of software, including embedded real-time systems, network protocols, compilers, distributed databases and client/server applications. For the past eight years, he has focused on commercial enterprise-class directory-based applications and directory-management software.
