"TO BUILDERS OF WOODEN BOATS, HIS CRAFT IS ART" The News Tribune, Tacoma WA
FLORENCE, OR - Art Kleiner builds classic wooden boats with modern, low-maintenance materials. He is specialized in manufacturing cedar strip canoes, stitch &
glue canoes, kayaks, rowboats and sailboats of finest quality. He also supplies the
home boat builder with boat building raw-materials, such as bead & cove cedar strip,
marine plywood, epoxy, fiberglass and How-To boat building books. Boats are offered
at a large price range from do-it-yourself, starting at $ 695.- to high qualify custom
built boats ranging anywhere from $ 2'500 to 6'500. Art's wooden boats, typically
outlast fiberglass boats and run more quietly than aluminum boats.
"A Florence boat builder creates functional works of art" Register Guard, Eugene OR
Wooden boats normally require a lot of maintenance work, not so with Art's boats, he says that his boats are coated inside and out with a thin layer of fiberglass - letting the wood shine through the fiberglass - leaving his boats virtually maintenance free.
"Kleiner's boats look more suited for an art gallery than tied to a dock"
Curry Coastal Pilot
Art Kleiner of Switzerland has always had a great love for boats starting at the age of
8, he built his first sailboat and floated it on the 20 mile long lake of Zurich.
He left Zurich in 1994 together with his Swiss/American wife to set up his boat
building shop Art's Nautical Wood Works, just 5 miles north of Florence on the
Central Oregon Coast.
Through a large window customers can watch Art in action, as he builds his 'works of
art'. Inside the workshop you can see a unique display of boats, projects that have just begun, other boat projects that are well advanced as well as finished boats for sale.
"The most unusual aspect of the business is what Kleiner calls the "educational
window". The window which connects the Honey Stop to Kleiner's boat shop allowing
customers to observe the work in progress"
THE WORLD, Coos Bay OR
Besides full-size boats and boat kits Art loves to build creative nautical decorations
such as boat book shelves, boat coffee tables and baby cradles (for future captains), lighthouses, anchors, paddles, oars, clocks, half hulls and other nautical indoor oroutdoor yard decorative items. His indoor decorative items are displayed in hotels, restaurants, stores, log & fishing cabins and in private homes.
Art understands to carefully select various colors of wood for his boat building projects and masterfully joins dark, medium and lighter shades of wood in one boat and tops it off with spectacular decks that customers enjoy looking at during their boat outings for many years to come. The beautiful color shades of wood are then coated with high quality varnished which makes the woods literally glow and brings out the best in every fiber of wood.
"A master craftsman of fine wooden boats" The Oregonian, Portland OR
Art offers another treasure not seen anywhere else in small boat building. He also specialized in building glass bottom canoes. These glass bottom boats are a lot of fun for big and small children, as you get to study the underwater world through your boat - without getting wet. Observe how many different plant and fish species you can discover while floating along the edge of a clear lake - you'd be surprised!
In April 2000 Art launched in brand-new website www.artcanoes.com where you will
find photos of the treasures he builds. - XXX
