Beginning October 1, 2000, the Federal government is mandating states to require a Social Security number from individuals who obtain or renew a drivers permit.
One state, Michigan, is fighting the ruling saying it violates personal privacy. That fight is being led by Secretary of State Candice Miller.
The pretext the government is using is they can use the number for tracking illegal aliens and deadbeat parents. The truth is, they already have this capability through the Internal Revenue Service and the Social Security Administration - so why the duplication?
Forcing the use of this number will encourage identity theft and could revive the ease of stalking against women; a slap in the face of the stalking amendment passed by Senator Barbara Boxer.
Further, this rule is a direct violation of the Privacy Act of 1974 and goes against the thrust of the Social Security agency. Older SS cards state clearly on the front that "Not to be used for purposes of identification."
Citizens concerned about the continuing attack on American privacy are urged to voice their dissent to their elected officials and and to not comply come October 1.
