FATHERS DAY 2000: A CELEBRATION OF DADS CHANGING ROLE

MASSAPEQUA, NY (August, 2002) -- Do you know where your dad is?

In many American households, hes right at home -- working from a home office, or simply spending more time with the family. In fact, studies show that kids today get more parental attention than they did 20 years ago -- due in part to the changing role of the American dad.

Weve seen a transformation not only of the American workplace, but of the American worker, the family -- and the role the father is playing in the household today," said David Drucker, a work-at-home dad and founder of FathersWorld.com, a popular Web site devoted to dads. This is a positive change. Its a different world out there than it was during Robert Youngs day when father knew best. Dads today are providing hands-on guidance, nurturing and positive role modeling. Todays fathers who stay at home with their families know something that others may not know as well: their families."

Think todays dad is no different from dads of a generation ago? Think again. The U.S. Census Bureau found that in 1993, at-home dads topped two million -- an increase of 25% from a decade prior. And their attitudes are changing. Mens Health magazine found that 81% of men found success in their families -- not their careers. In the late 1970s, fathers spent around 2 hours a day with their children; it now tops 2.3 hours each day, reports a 1997 National Study of the Changing Workforce. Dads also are spending more time -- upward of 10 hours each week -- cleaning, cooking, and doing repairs around the house, according to the University of Maryland.

Druckers site, Fathers World (www.fathersworld.com) is a informational and insightful resource for dads of all kinds. Themed as A Community for Men who Value Fathering and their Families," the site offers news and columns on parenting, work, health, cooking, news, and a variety of other topics. The site was created in 1998 by Drucker, a single, work-at-home father of a teenage daughter. He sought the camaraderie of other stay- and work-at-home dads, but could find few such resources online. So he decided to launch his own. Drucker works with other at-home fathers to write the content, which Drucker then posts to the site he designed, created and continually refreshes with new articles and insights.

The result is a free Web site --subscription fees. Father's World, Inc. is a 501( c )3 non-profit organization seeks to work with sponsors and organizations seeking to help fund the effort through tax-deductible donations.

Ive tried to make the site funny, warm, touching, insightful and inspirational for the millions of dads who have made the choice to stay at home with their families," Drucker says. Home is a wonderful place to work, to live and to be -- not just when the offices close downtown, but all day, any day. Theres no greater reward than to see your family grow before your eyes."
