Fiction Or Fact -- Is The East Coast In Danger Of Tsunamis?

Baltimore, MD, May 31, 2000 - Your vacation to the beach this summer just may leave you wondering, is it safe? No longer will you lie under the warm summer sun on that calm serene day or sail into the sunset without the threat of tsunamis. Thats right! Tsunamis on the east coast may now be a reality. Traveling at speeds up to 500 mph, tsunamis strike without warning and can be devastating.

When Neil Driscoll, Jeffrey Weissel and John Goff discovered cracks in the ocean floor that could cause tsunamis on the east coast, little did they know that the site where the cracks occur were very close to the site identified in The Tiger Cruise, a novel published last December. The Tiger Cruise, two years in the making, will make your blood rush when you read the description of the tsunamis striking Norfolk.

A two-week expedition by the Woods Hole Institution, which ended Saturday May 20, confirms the threat. The cracks in the Atlantic ridge stretching for 25 miles just off the continental shelf may require a Tsunami Warning System in the East similar to that in the Pacific.

Remarkably, The Tiger Cruise describes devastation to Virginia, North Carolina and the Delmarva Peninsula not unlike what would occur if the cracks in the Atlantic suddenly break off resulting in an undersea landslide. In a strange twist, the fictional account brilliantly portrayed in the book, now borders on prophecy.

Said Dr. John Goth, research scientist, who left with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution to explore the area, What a tremendous coincidence!"
