GALLEON WIRELESS BROADBAND INTRODUCES OUTDOOR UNIT, SETTING NEW PRICE/PERFORMANCE BENCHMARK Product Unveiling Coincides With Company Name Change

MILPITAS, Calif., August 14, 2000 -- Galleon is introducing today its Outdoor Unit (ODU), a high performance radio transceiver for Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) communications that establishes a new industry price/performance benchmark. Priced well below competing products, the Galleon ODU will be available in limited production quantities during the fourth quarter of 2000.
The announcement coincides with the Milpitas, Calif.-based companys decision to adopt the name Galleon Wireless Broadband, after operating since its founding as BELSTAR. Prior to this formal launch into the high-end segment of the BWA market (networks with Radio Frequency
-- RF -- bands of 24 GHz or higher), the company focused on development and field trials for the ODU along with its principal technology subcontractor, Northrup Grumman Corp. Galleon plans to offer a complete suite of high-end BWA network products, with the first of these additional introductions scheduled for later this year.
BWA gives telecommunications network operators a wireless means of providing their customers with two-way voice, data and video transmission services. A BWA network operates at

much faster data rates compared to other broadband networks, such as Cable Modem and Digital Subscriber Line (DSL), providing downstream throughput speeds of 155 megabits per second (Mbps) versus 50 Mbps and 6 Mbps, respectively, for the latter two networks. However, the technology has been slow to emerge due to the high cost of BWA equipment. Radio transceivers
(or ODUs), in particular, are not only expensive but are also a high-quantity item in BWA networks.
The Galleon ODU is aimed directly at establishing the commercial viability of BWA technology as the company is offering its product at prices several times below that of competing ODUs. Galleon determines specific per-unit pricing by order quantity and contract duration.
We expect demand for BWA to grow rapidly with the availability of our low-cost, high-performance radio transceiver," said Dan Reiss, vice president, business development and sales for Galleon. This product is significant to the market because now operators can cost-effectively modernize old infrastructure or quickly deploy new networks. In developing countries, the need for cost-effective, easy to deploy wireless infrastructure is key to economic progress so the growth potential for BWA in these markets is phenomenal."
The price-to-performance advantages of the Galleon ODU are based on Microwave Monolithic Integrated Circuit (MMIC) technology. The ODUs integrated MMIC dramatically lowers the number of components required as well as associated manufacturing and maintenance
costs. At the same time, the Galleon ODU provides up to 2 GHz of bandwidth with a 16-gigabit
bandwidth yield (assuming 64 QAM, quadrature amplitude modulation), making it the biggest

The Galleon ODU features a small, weatherproof housing into which one or a combination of three chipsets and filters may be inserted to support RF bands ranging from 23.5 GHz to 43.5 GHz. This modular architecture enables Galleon to offer a highly flexible ODU that can adapt quickly and easily to the changing needs of the network operator. In addition, the modularity is complemented by standard interfaces (DAVIC, DOCSIS, UHF and others) for easy network integration.
Maximizing fast, easy deployment, the Galleon ODU can be tuned during production or dynamically adjusted in the field.
The ODU maintains communication reliability and high signal quality through advanced Voltage Controlled Oscillator (VCO) circuitry, which delivers high stability (even while handling large amounts of small signals) and very low phase noise. Network operators can also order the product with additional oscillator circuitry for extremely low phase noise applications.
