The Takoma Park Folk Festival Presents Dozens of Musicians, Dancers, Artisans for 23rd Year

All day free festival features music, dance, crafts, childrens events and international food

Sunday, September 10, 2000, 11am to 6:30pm

   The 23rd Annual Takoma Park Folk Festival once again brings a unique blend of FREE world-class music, dance, and crafts to the DC metro area. The festival--staffed entirely by volunteers--draws several thousand folk enthusiasts each year to listen and dance to the music of renowned local, regional, and international performers.
   This years festival takes place on Sunday, September 10 from 11 am to 6:30 pm at Takoma Parks municipal complex at the intersection of Route 410 and Maple Avenue in Takoma Park, Maryland. The location is easily accessible by car, bus, or metro. Free shuttle bus service will be provided from both the Takoma Metro and nearby parking lots.
   Festival attendees of all ages will enjoy a wide variety of ethnic foods and unique, handcrafted items, as well as musicians and dancers representing styles and cultures from around the world. Presentations will run continuously on six stages all day--more than 45 performances in all.

   Whatever style of music you like-weve got it," said Pam Larson, chair of the Festivals program committee. Weve got talented, up-and-coming singer-songwriters, as well as fabulous musicians who are well-known for their variety of folk music styles and instruments. Festival-goers can also hear music and see dances from many world cultures."
   National and local favorites who will appear the Festival include Roustabout, Al Petteway & Amy White, Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer, Namu Lwanga, In Process..., Reverb, Mary Byrd Brown, Chuck Durfor, Imani Gonzales, Hot Soup, Irish Fire, the Blue Moon Cowgirls, Los Quetzales, and many more. Dance workshops will include contra, swing, tango, salsa, polka/ballroom and International folk dancing.
   Special musicians and storytellers, as well as games and hands-on crafts, offer a full day of fun for kids of all ages. The setting is beautiful, and were alcohol-free-its perfect for the whole family," said Kevin Adler, one of the festivals organizers.
   The festival is made possible in part by grants from the Maryland State Arts Council, the Arts & Humanities Council of Montgomery County, and the Takoma Foundation Fund of the Montgomery County Community Fund. Stage sponsors are The Washington Post, Hober Thinking Radio, Takoma Old Town Business Association, and the Silver Spring YMCA. WAMU 88.5 FM is the media sponsor. Other major supporters are the City of Takoma Park, Verizon Foundation, Adventist Health Care, and the Folklore Society of Greater Washington.
