Forecast sales of Wireless LANs to Reach $2-bil by 2003
The U.S. wireless LAN market will reach $2-bil by 2003, up from $300-mil in 1998. Sales were given a boost in 1999 with the adoption of the 802.11b standard. Installation speed (no need to drag cables through walls and ceilings), scalability, and declining cost will sustain high annual growth beyond 2003. By then there will be in excess of 20-mil wireless LAN users in the U.S.
Unlike Internet access via cell phones and other handheld wireless devices, wireless LANs don't rely on imagined applications. Rather wireless LANs simply mobilize LAN access and applications remain the same as over wired networks - accessing files, exchanging e-mail, data analysis....
Wireless LANs are particularly appealing to small, rapidly growing companies where the wireless technology adapts well to adding personnel and moving business units from one location to another. Major vendors of wireless LANs to companies of all sizes include Lucent, Proxim, and Aironet.
