Boston -- Sept. 8 -- The Boston Globe announced today that its special recruitment section for Sunday, September 10 - called "The Big Help" - will be the newspaper's largest September section since the Big Help began in 1995, totaling 152 pages of help wanted ads.
Septembers Big Help also ranks as the papers fifth largest help wanted section ever published on a single day. The top four were all published in January: 1998 (184 pages), 2000 (173), 1997 (164), and 1999 (162).
The Globe publishes two 'Big Help sections annually. Last years September section contained 131 pages. Also, the paper continues its "Jobapalooza" recruitment sections, specifically directed to high-technology, one of New Englands largest industries. The Globe is publishing four of these sections in 2000.
Globe Chairman and Publisher Richard H. Gilman said "The continued great strength of our help wanted advertising is yet another sign of a booming New England economy. Its also a clear indication that newspapers as always are a powerful and productive means to meet the needs of recruitment advertisers."
The Sunday, September 10 section contains 3,560 ads, with 74 percent -- 113 pages -- falling in the professional help category. Color ads total 174, a jump of 58 percent from the previous September.
Historically, the lions share of print help wanted advertising in the Boston and New England markets appears in the Globe, according to Competitive Media Reporting, an independent firm that audits ad linage. Figures for January through June 2000, for example, show the Globe with a 68 percent share for combined daily and Sunday, and an 87 percent share for Sunday only.
