Software to Reduce Medical Errors Released

Omaha, NE -- An innovative software product to aid in the reduction of medical errors has been released.

Called Root Cause Analyst, its the only automated root cause analysis product on the market designed specifically for the health care industry by health care quality specialists.

The move to create Root Cause Analyst was motivated by the growing recognition that the complexity of health care and health care delivery increases the incidence of medical errors to startling levels. In November of 1999 the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences cited as many as 98,000 patients die every year in the United States due to preventable medical mistakes.

We see this product as an extremely important tool in the reduction of medical errors," said William Allan, chief executive officer of the Omaha, NE, software company that automated the product. Before anyone can hope to reduce medical errors, a thorough investigation must take place to identify and report the causes. Only when we know what series of steps led to an adverse event can changes be implemented to safeguard the future."

Root Cause Analyst is an automated, complex logic structure used to identify the causes of adverse outcomes, with the goal of preventing the recurrence of such events. It is the first automated product designed specifically to guide health care professionals through the performance of what risk managers call a root cause analysis.

The software has gained attention in foreign markets as well.
