Mac-Centric Internet Portal Adds Web Search
Tuesday, December 14, 1999 - Franklin Square, New York - MacLaunch (http://www.maclaunch.com), the Internet's first comprehensive portal site targeted exclusively at Macintosh users, announced its new web search engine based on the dmoz.org Open Directory Project (http://www.dmoz.org).
The addition of a web search tool to the MacLaunch service allows Macintosh users to access a database of over 1.2 million web sites organized into over 193,000 different categories. The MacLaunch/Open Directory web search is administered by over 20,000 human editors from around the globe.
When announcing the MacLaunch web search tool, MacLaunch Vice President Drew Linsalata commented, "This is another banner day for the Macintosh user community. Now there is a powerful web search engine nestled comfortably within the confines of a Mac-friendly service, giving Macintosh enthusiasts a viable alternative to the Windows/Intel biased services offered elsewhere. We welcome all members of the Mac user community to use our search engine, and we encourage Mac users to get involved in the Open Directory Project as category editors".
MacLaunch is dedicated to providing a wide range of online information and communication services with a decidedly Mac-centric twist. Picking up where standard Internet portal sites fall short for the Mac user community, MacLaunch combines Mac-centric news, opinions, software updates, shopping opportunities and a fully searchable database of Mac-related Internet sites with standard portal tools such as free email, chat services, news, sports, weather, financial management tools and a global Internet directory/search service.
The Open Directory web site includes the following statement:
As the web grows, automated search engines and directories with small editorial staffs will be unable to cope with the volume of sites. The Open Directory Project's goal is to produce the most comprehensive directory of the web, by relying on a vast army of volunteer editors.
MacLaunch is a service of the Mac Portal Company, Inc., a privately held concern based on Long Island, New York.
