Electronic book offers vehicle for creation of personal movie chronicles

Dewey, IL-Dale Adams was a caregiver for his 95-year-old aunt for several years. During that time, he and Mary OHair enjoyed many movies together. Realizing that his elderly aunt was forgetting the particulars of many of her favorite flicks, Adams designed a movie log so that he and his aunt could better discuss the movies they had viewed, share what they each liked or disliked about them and better remember the details of each movie. This exercise helped not only stimulate O'Hair's mind, but made the movies more enjoyable for them both.

Adams soon realized that this would be a great learning tool for children, as well. While using the logs, his aunt became more alert and participated in the conversation more fluently. It also served to strengthen the older womans memory.

About the same time, Adams noticed that the majority of publicity released for movies appeared negative. The motion picture industrys marketing focus seemed to be on the violent, frightening and obscene aspects of each picture, with little or no mention of the educational features or advantages of watching movies. No matter what type of movie you watch," Adams states, you will always learn something from it."

To harness this conviction about the educational benefit of movies into a useful outlet for parents, Adams created, My Movie Collection, an easy-to-use manual which helps moviegoers of all ages concentrate on the positive characteristics of the movies they watch.

My Movie Collection contains several movie logs" and instructions for their completion. The idea is to watch a movie, then record various facts about the movie in the book. Some items to log include new words learned from the movie (increases vocabulary), information about the filmmakers such as directors and actors names (increases attention to detail), and most/least liked features (promotes critical thinking). The act of recording the information on the movie logs assists in comprehension of the movies theme, in addition to reinforcing knowledge acquired while viewing.

Besides educational benefits from watching movies, the interaction with family and friends enhances movie enjoyment, and Adams believes that My Movie Collection assists viewers in maximizing their pleasure.
