Richard Stallman to Visit Cincinnati
Press Release
Richard M. Stallman of the Free Software Foundation Visits Cincinnati
The Cincinnati GNU/Linux Users Group, in conjunction with the University of
Cincinnati, is pleased to host Mr. Richard M. Stallman of the Free Software
Foundation for a talk on "The GNU/Linux System and The Free Software
Movement". The talk will be at the University of Cincinnati Engineering
Research Building Auditorium, Room 427 at 7:00 p.m. on January 24th, 2000.
This event is open to the public and everyone is welcome.
Mr. Stallman will speak on the goals, motivations, history, and future plans
of the GNU project. GNU is planned as a complete software system which is
*free*: everyone is free to copy it and redistribute it, as well as to make
changes either large or small.
GNU/Linux, which some call just "Linux", is a coupling of the GNU system,
started by Mr. Stallman and the Free Software Foundation in 1984, and the
Unix-like kernel component, Linux, began by Linus Torvalds while he was a
student at the University of Helsinki, Finland. There are estimated to be
over 10 million users of GNU/Linux systems today.
In 1991, Mr. Stallman received the Grace Hopper Award from the Association
for Computing Machinery for his development of the first Emacs editor. In
1990 he was awarded a MacArthur Foundation fellowship, and in 1996 an
honorary doctorate from the Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden. In 1998
he received the Electronic Frontier Foundation's Pioneer award along with
Linus Torvalds. In 1999, he received the Yuri Rubinski Award.
The Free Software Foundation (FSF) is dedicated to eliminating restrictions
on copying, redistributing, understanding, and modifying computer programs.
They do this by promoting the development and use of free software in all
areas of computing---but most particularly, by helping to develop the GNU
operating system.
The Cincinnati GNU/Linux Users Group is a local organization dedicated to
promoting the use of the GNU/Linux System. Founded in 1996, the group has
been instrumental in supporting local GNU/Linux users in Cincinnati.
