DOMAINBANK PARTICIPATES IN NEW TOP LEVEL DOMAIN NAME CONSORTIUM

(PRWEB) October 5, 2000

Domain Bank, Inc., http://www.Domainbank.com, a Bethlehem Pennsylvania-based ICANN accredited Domain registrar announced today that it will participate as a founding member in an international consortium consisting of nineteen of the world’s leading domain name registrars to propose a new top level domain (TLD) to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).

Hal Lubsen, Domain Bank, Inc. President stated “We are very pleased to join with the other leaders of the domain registration industry to bring new choices in TLD’s to the world. With these proposed new choices for domain names, Internet users will be able to secure web site addresses of their first choice.”

“This is our first step down a path which is intended to transform the Internet from a fragmented marketplace into a truly global resource for individuals and businesses everywhere. As one of the pioneer registrar companies and the first active ICANN post-testbed registrar, Domain Bank, Inc. has consistently advocated new technologies and is proud to be a part of this ground-breaking effort.”

The consortium, named Afilias, http://www.afilias.org, combines a powerful alliance of the world's leading registrar companies, and believes it has the industry experience to effectively administer a new worldwide registry. Afilias' open business model, which will allow other ICANN-accredited registrar companies to join the consortium, promotes growth and competition for the Internet community and its registrars, a long-term goal of ICANN, a technical coordination body for the Internet.

Afilias’s concept of a broader domain name space came to fruition in July following ICANN’s decision to accept applications for the introduction of new TLD’s. Domain Bank, Inc, staff worked tirelessly with other Afilias participants to submit a detailed application with extensive supporting documentation to ICANN on October 2, 2000. Applications that are approved later this year may be permitted to operate new TLD’s as early as 2001.
