SYRED announces first Gigabit Ethernet- based Storage Area Network (SAN)

Howell, NJ—October 5, 2000—Syred Data Systems, a recognized leader in high performance Network related storage solutions such as SAN, NAS and RAID, unveil the worlds first SAN over Gigabit Ethernet, which will provide workstations and Servers with unparalleled performance and scalability. It will be available for evaluation in November 2000.

The SANDISK is a powerful, intelligent, and extremely fast network infrastructure device incorporating key components to make a single integrated, reliable, plug and play appliance that builds, and manages a shared data storage network. This SAN appliance offers multiple Gigabit Ethernet connection.

SANDISK overcomes Fibre Channel SAN limitations, which does not provide data access and management services such as data sharing. With Fibre Channel SAN each server has its own dedicated logical device that is not shared with other servers, the file system within each server becomes the limiting factor. Each server owns a portion of the disk and cannot access data owned by another server. The puzzle gets even worse when heterogeneous servers are introduced.

Powered by Syred SAN operating system (S2-OS), it offers 64-bit shared file system to override traditional file system limits. It supports files up to 9 million TB. S2-OS is a clustered file system offering a true data sharing over heterogeneous hosts. The disks and volumes are then shared over the SAN.

SANDISK implements a shared file system so that all SAN attached systems can access simultaneously the same volume, even in a SAN environment comprehending heterogeneous systems. It is an enterprise storage management solution with performance advantages for the enterprise since it isolates one of the critical, but resource intensive, storage management process, namely backup.

SANDISK eliminates the requirement for file servers, which are often bottlenecks that reduce performance and are single point of failures. Users are provided with managed, shared and high-speed data access.

With SANDISK, Syred targets the low to mid-tier market that will not invest in costly Fibre Channel network that on top has product incompatibility issues to address, but would preferably take advantage of existing and proven Gigabit Ethernet technology.
