ARTIST VICKERS UNVEILS SERIES OF FENG SHUI SCULPTURES
Benicia, California artist Marques Vickers has released a new series of Feng Shui figurative torso sculptures. The limited edition series features each of the nine color coordinates of the Bagua Map, the fundamental orientation guide of Feng Shui (‘Wind and Water) positioning. The sculptural works are currently available through Vickers website at www.marquesv.com and over 30+ internet auction sites worldwide. Each custom molded figurative sculpture is individually fashioned with a mixed media composition and sealed in a Dupont IMROM 610 resin for durability and color clarity. The sculptures are designed for display in an interior environment either on a floor based pedestal or positioned on a wall as a relief mounting.
Feng Shui, as an expanding lifestyle movement, is integrated into a home and work environment deeply affecting an individuals effectiveness, relationships, health and well being. Harmonizing environments support, heal and inspire through a simultaneous response to function, ambiance and meaning. Proper coordination requires the combined skills of architectural/interior design, geomancy, environmental and psychology participation.
Vickers, 43, was recently selected as one of twenty international artists to exhibit at the MAC 21 International Contemporary Art Fair in Marbella, Spain, July 19-24, 2000. The annual fair is the largest showcase of contemporary international artwork in Spain featuring some of Europes most renowned galleries and art organizations. He was also selected as one of two Americans for the European Art Channel EXPOART 2000 exhibition based in Cologne, Germany.
His sculptural work is grounded in steel, wood and mixed media textile assemblages introducing thematic elements into his work including Iconic Totems (based on contemporary totemic imagery) and Neo-Archetypes (the integration of Carl Jungs theory of universal consciousness). His primary sculptural influences include renowned fellow Benicians Manuel Neri and Robert Arneson and 20th century sculptors George Segal, Constantin Brancusi, Alberto Giacometti, Jean Arp and Henry Moore.
As a painter, Vickers' work has evolved towards a liberated expression of Figurative abstraction. Drawing compositional inspiration from European abstractionists Concha Benedito and Luciano Castelli, Vickers' female forms capture expansive dance positions representing transitional passages of movement. The fluidity of these transitions are reflected in the variating color combinations, textured surfaces and sweeping brushstroke techniques.
