Death by Email, an interactive Ebook by holistic health author Joy Gardner, will be officially released on the Internet Friday, October 27. This, her tenth book, is an experiment with electronic self-publishing. Available at http://death.highvibrations.net, these are the actual email letters Ms. Gardner wrote during the final weeks of her husband's battle with cancer, and after his death.

In an unusual publishing approach, readers may respond to the letters on an interactive bulletin board. Since Raphael Gardner-Gordon was "a sensual artist and a generally outrageous character," the 66 emails, together with the introductory material-including some highly unconventional Wedding Vows-contain a generous amount of pathos, humor, straight talk about sex, relationships, and religion, and just plain honesty. There is no doubt that these controversial letters will spark some illuminating cross-talk. Ms. Gardner offers the entire Ebook on a donation basis. A spiral-bound version is available through the web site, and a CD version is planned.

  • one of the founding members of a hospice in British Columbia in the eighties, Joy Gardner (formerly Gardner-Gordon) was particularly qualified to care for her dying husband. She was a student of Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, the Swiss psychiatrist who pioneered work in Death and Loss.

  • Gardner has been a forerunner in various aspects of holistic healing. In 1968 her first book, Healing Yourself, was one of the first medicinal herbals in North America in modern times. Ms. Gardner was one of the first herbalists, acupuncturists, death and loss counselors, and vibrational healers in the US. Her most recent book, Pocket Guide to Chakras, sold 2,500 copies in its first month of publication. Gardner currently lives and teaches on the Big Island of Hawaii, where her two-week Vibrational Healing Intensives draw students from all over the world.
