Fujitsu Microelectronics announces SAW filters in ultra small packages for W-CDMA applications

November 21st 2000. Fujitsu Microelectronics has announced a new family of SAW filters designed specifically for the Wideband CDMA market. With the new chips ready to go into mass production, the company is simply waiting for the UMTS handsets for these devices of the future to be available.

This new family, part of the well-known F6 series, targets high frequency (1.95 and 2.14GHz) wideband applications. These piezoelectric filters are based on LiTaO3 and are supplied in small 3mm2 and 2.5mm x 2mm surface mounted packaging of less than 1mm high, which provides high stability and performance, making it the ideal solution for the new W-CDMA applications.

Developed in Japan, the brand new devices provide excellent performance with regards to an insertion loss of less than 4dB and high stop band attenuation. With an impedance of 50 Ohms, no external matching circuits are required.

The SAW filters are offered in different package sizes in order to meet different needs like compatibility or size restrictions, and the most advanced 2.5mm x 2mm 6-pin package used is ideal for the ultra small phone designs planned for the future.

There are four different single-ended devices in the new range. These are the FAR-F6CE-1G9500-L2ZP transmitter and FAR-F6CE-2G1400-L2ZQ receiver in 3mm x 3mm packages, and the FAR-F6CP-1G9500-L21P transmitter and the FAR-F6CP-1G9400-L21Q receiver housed in 2.5mm x 2mm packages. Balanced SAWs for W-CDMA are also currently under development.

The single ended devices each have one input and one output pin, whereas the planned balanced Rx filter will have one input pin and balanced output pins allowing it to be directly connected to a mixer input (Tx: balanced input / single output).

These new filters designed by Fujitsu are developed in the ladder type design, a combination of serial and parallel on-chip resonators, which achieve the low insertion loss and high stop band attenuation required for the W-CDMA applications. W-CDMA is intended for advanced high bandwidth communications such as the planned combined video-phone and high speed data transmission system.

Housed in an SMT leadless chip carrier (LCC) package taking advantage of the very latest flip-chip technology, the filters offer low inductance and high resistance to climate variations, mechanical vibration and shock. All devices operate in the temperature range -30C to +85C.
