French fashion industry sees

great potential in Singapore

French Fashion Furor (FFF) is a large-scale fashion event in Singapore that involves some of the biggest French designers and experts. It is the first of its kind to be organised in Southeast Asia. This S$1 million project is hosted in Singapore because of the city's potential for being the fashion hub in this region.

FFF is supported by the French Embassy in Singapore and Alliance Francaise de Singapour, and is an effort encouraged by the Singapore Tourism Board (STB). The government bodies have joined forces with local event organiser, Twilight (International) Production Pte Ltd to create a fashion event that has cultural, commercial and pedagogic dimensions.

According to Alliance Francaise's Executive Director, Sydney Peyroles, "French Fashion Furor is a project which wonderfully suits Singapore's will to be a Renaissance City. It is an original and creative event that links art, industry and education. It shows how fashion is constantly changing. That is why we would like to diversify the image of French Fashion and to build up awareness for the New Generation of French designers, focusing not only on the link with a glamorous tradition, but also on their capacity to propose new visions and approaches. We expect this event to be the source of fruitful and dynamic exchanges."

The French Embassy believes that the local fashion trade can benefit tremendously from Singapore's ranking as Asia's top convention city and its key role in showcasing consumer goods. Mr Pierre Mayaudon, Counsellor & Deputy Chief of Mission of the French Embassy says, "We believe that there is much potential for the

fashion industry to grow in Singapore. The lion city has the highest average wealth per person in Southeast Asia. Its unique geographical situation and communications system make it an ideal business destination. Moreover, Singapore is decidedly poised to become the hub for fashion in the East".

On the commercial aspect of the event, Mr Jean-Yves Bajon, Economic & Commercial Counsellor of the French Embassy states that FFF "provides the opportunity for the Commercial & Economic Section of the Embassy to facilitate further trade relations on a local and regional scale. We hope to attract additional fashion buyers from both Singapore and regional countries to attend this week-long event."

The Singapore Tourism Board (STB )hopes that more similar world-class fashion events will be staged in Singapore as these contribute to developing the country into a fashion hub of the region, an outcome that is part of the Board's Tourism 21 vision of turning Singapore into a tourism capital.

French Fashion Furor is the second major fashion event organised under the 3-year project called Fashion Coalition. Fashion Coalition was conceived in 1999 by Twilight as Singapore's answer to an international fashion week, forging creative partnerships with the fashion capitals like Paris or London. "Our goal is to facilitate a thriving fashion scene in Singapore by providing a runway for designer insights, industry networks and fashion education advancements, " says Twilight's managing director, David Lim.
