TRANSCEPT TRANSCELL RF DISTRIBUTION SOLUTIONS TO SUPPORT WIRELESS DATA COMMUNICATIONS

- Wireless Equipment Innovator to Enable Wireless Data Offerings from Wireless Operators and Bandwidth Providers -

New Orleans, LA - February 28, 2000 - Transcept Inc., a developer of innovative and cost-effective RF products for wireless networks, today announced at CTIA's Wireless 2000 trade show its plans to support wireless data communications over cable, fiber, and microwave with the Company's TransCell family of alternative wireless architectures.

Taking a lead position in the emergence of the wireless data market, Transcept will leverage its extensive portfolio of intellectual property, and the Company's successes with alternative PCS architectures, to provide wireless carriers and bandwidth providers with the means to bring the promise of ubiquitous mobile, wireless data communications to reality. TransCell products offer wireless data support for some protocols now and will support many others by the end of the year, the Company said.

"The wireless data market, which we estimate at being worth well over a billion dollars in three to five years, will depend on distribution and transmission technologies to drive the critical early adopter phase," said Elliott Hamilton, Senior Vice President and Director of Global Wireless for The Strategis Group. "We're already seeing development of some services and appliances, but without a ubiquitous, high-speed conduit to support wireless data transmission and protocols, the market has nowhere to go."

The TransCell family of alternative wireless RF distribution devices is being upgraded to support a host of protocols for its first-generation of wireless data solutions, including I-CDMA, HDR, UTRA, CDMA 2000, and EDGE, at multiple frequencies. Support for these protocols will ensure that networks in which TransCell equipment is deployed will have the capability to support all wireless data applications.

"The biggest barrier to development and widespread adoption of wireless data solutions is a lack of capacity and ubiquitous coverage at transmission speeds that meet the increased demands of today's users and applications," stated Steven Johnson, President and CEO of Transcept, Inc. "Our solutions are already proven to be effective in enabling flexibility and rapid response to the unique challenges of wireless communications. We are more than certain that, by supporting wireless data, our TransCell solutions will give wireless service providers the means to deliver high-demand communications services to the fixed and mobile marketplaces."
