Weekly Reader Corporation's READ Seeks Submissions for Bowler Poetry Prize
Stamford, CT, March 2000 -- Weekly Reader Corporation and its middle and high school literary magazine, READ, is seeking submissions for its 12th annual Ann Arlys Bowler Poetry Prize.
Six national winners and six semifinalists will be chosen. Winning poets will be awarded $100 each, a medal of honor, publication of the winning poem in a fall issue of READ, a certificate of excellence, and national publicity. Semifinalists will be awarded $50 each and certificates and will be eligible for publication in READ.
Students in grades 6 through 12 are eligible to enter. Deadline is April 1, 2000.
How to Enter:
Step 1. Students may submit up to three poems in any genre (such
as open verse, rhyme, narrative, concrete). Each poem must be
typewritten and must not be longer than one page.
Step 2. A completely filled-out entry coupon, including
signatures verifying that the work is original, must accompany each
submission. Editors check for plagiarizing. Staple one coupon to the
back of each entire entry. Do not include a cover letter or an
S.A.S.E. Winners will be notified.
Step 3. Submissions must be postmarked no later than April 1,
2000. Winners will be notified by May 15, 2000. Mail your entry to

Founded in 1951, READ has over the years published the best of classic literature and award-winning contemporary young adult literature. Classic authors such as William Shakespeare, Nathaniel Hawthorne, H.G. Wells, Charlotte Bronte, and Edgar A. Poe have shared the pages of READ with such popular contemporary authors as Lois Lowry, Susan Fisher Staples, Gary Paulsen, Walter Dean Myers, and Jane Yolen.
Currently, READ is one of the largest literature magazines serving middle and high school populations in the country, with a pass-along circulation of about one million student readers. It is offered as a four-over-two color, 32 page, digest-size periodical with an accompanying Teacher's Guide.
Subscriptions to READ's 18 issues are offered at $8.95 per subscription for 10 or more orders. Ordering may be done on-line through the Weekly Reader Store at its Galaxy web site.
