AllforWomen.com Supports Million Mom March on Washington, DC this Mother's Day and Encourages Other Women's Sites on the Web to Endorse the Movement
Columbia, Maryland, April 1, 2000 - This is no April Fool's joke. Outraged by gun violence that has killed or wounded children, thousands of mothers are organizing the Million Mom March aimed at pressuring Congress to enact tougher controls on guns.
On Sunday, May 14, 2000 - Mother's Day - mothers and "honorary moms" from across the United States will march on Washington, DC and in their communities to encourage Congress to pass sensible gun legislation.
The nine month campaign began in August, 1999. Following the Granada Hills, CA day-camp shooting, New Jersey resident and mother Donna Dees-Thomases applied for a permit to march in Washington, DC. With Mother's Day as the backdrop for the March, mothers, families, and "honorary moms" will join Donna on the National Mall to demand licensing and registration for handguns.
"We want Congress to create a meaningful gun policy in this country that treats guns like cars. We are asking Congress to enact sensible laws, or face a "time-out" in November," Thomases said. Million Mom March supporters intend to make gun policy an issue in the 2000 congressional races.
Mother's Day originated during the Civil War to remind women to take care of each other's wounded sons. This Mother's Day, AllforWomen.com representatives will join in on the effort to raise awareness and promote the March's goal. "It is an important movement by conscientious moms from across this country who are pained by gun violence and want our kids to be safe," says Deborah Brown, founder of AllforWomen.com.
With the far reaching capabilities of the Internet, AllforWomen.com is also encouraging other women's sites across the Web to endorse the movement by prominently displaying information about the March on their Web sites and providing links to supporting materials for their visitors.
